The Orland Park Village Board on Monday authorized spending $5.2 million for efforts intended to correct flooding problems in the village during heavy rains.

The board released a Flood Risk Reduction Study Report that outlines various storm water drainage improvements for areas that were adversely affected last July when 3.7 inches of rain fell in less than 3 hours.

Last August, village officials authorized Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. of Rosemont to perform the study in order to identify causes of the damage and to recommend possible solutions. Representatives from the engineering firm and village officials then began meeting with residents from the areas affected by the flood.

“This is just another step in the process,” said Trustee James Dodge.

Dodge said future meetings will be held with residents of each affected area to announce specific findings for each area. The first meeting with residents from the Windsor neighborhood is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday. The report recommends drainage improvements for 16 of 21 studied areas and proposes changes to village code.
