RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta

With the release of their galvanizing 2000 debut, “Let’s Get Free,” Florida’s Dead Prez looked poised to resurrect the political rap of hip-hop’s golden era. But “RBG” feels like too little, too late; it’s a strangely stilted effort that’s not musically or lyrically biting. From the weak R&B-infused beats to the ultimately empty politics, the revolution has never sounded this dull. One exception is the rump-shaking yet still menacingly strange “Hell Yeah (Pimp the System),” included twice, the second time a remix featuring Jay-Z.
