Sake isn’t just an accompaniment to sushi anymore. The drink is getting new attention from an odd source: the beauty industry.

Procter & Gamble has launched SK-II, an upscale skin-care treatment line, in the U.S.

The technology is based on a story from a sake brewery. As the story goes, a monk visited a brewery where he noticed the workers had unusually smooth hands. It turns out a substance extracted from the yeast during fermentation helps renew the outer layer of the skin. It has been used by Asian women for years.

The line is available at www.saks.com.
