Blonde Redhead

Misery is a Butterfly

Blonde Redhead has never quite escaped from the indie-rock ghetto, which shows that the novelty of having a pair of identical twins in the trio only goes so far. It’s too bad that the band didn’t start out like its latest, “Misery is a Butterfly,” which drops many of the No Wave and Krautrock influences in favor of something grander and more romantic. It’s sophisticated without ever being snobby, pretty without being placid, and spooky without being scary. It is, however, pretentious to an almost comical degree.
