Iron & Wine
Our Endless Numbered Days
Sam Beam’s got the sad sack thing down pat, but who can fault the guy for his tonal preferences? The music Beam makes as Iron & Wine is often lovely, in its own gloomy end-of-the-world way. His second full-length disc, recorded in Chicago with Brian Deck, is often stunningly enigmatic, at once arcane, anachronistic and oddly contemporary, spare but never empty-feeling. The album would have been just as great if it had been recorded in a haze of distortion.
