1. Holding pattern
Palmer will have played in a record 50 in a row at Augusta, but he earned most of his money from 1955-83, when he made all but four cuts. He hasn’t made a cut since, and his career earnings at the Masters stand at a relatively modest $199,013.
2. Carrying for Gramps
Palmer’s bag will be carried by grandson Samuel Palmer Saunders, 16, a highly regarded sophomore golfer at Trinity Prep in Florida.
3. Probably never again
Palmer and Mark O’Meara are the only two players in Masters history to birdie the two final holes on Sunday to win the tournament. Given the significant lengthening of No. 18 three years ago, their mark might stand forever.
4. Decade of dominance
From 1958 to 1967 at Augusta, Palmer finished first four times, second twice, third once and fourth twice. In 1968? He missed the cut.
5. Cornering ability
Palmer’s first Masters win came in ’58, the year of another notable Augusta breakthrough. That’s when noted writer Herbert Warren Wind borrowed a term from an old jazz song and nicknamed hole Nos. 11-13 as “Amen Corner.” Like Palmer, it had staying power.
