Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Alumni and fans have rallied behind their favorite college’s team in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, whose championship game is on Monday. So did sports bar fans in voting for their favorite places to hang out and cheer, and the Friday Sports Bar Championships has a winner.

In the age of the World Wide Web and high-speed data transfer, with the “run-and-gun” of e-mail, who would’ve thought that regular postcards, communications’ two-handed set shot, would carry the day? With nearly 85 percent of their votes coming via postcard, the 50 Yard Line Sports Bar & Grill vanquished all challengers.

If there were honorable mention awards to be given, the Arena Sports Grille fans would get one for “Team Spirit” with their votes that were the most heartfelt, but too few. Justins’ fans would get the “Iron Man” award for the stamina of individuals, who voted early and very, very often, but came up just short.

The early rounds found the Duke of the tournament–ESPN Zone–looking to be upset before pulling it out in the last minutes. In the finals, Zone fans wised up, started voting early and never let up. But, they couldn’t overcome the 50 Yard Line’s ferocious postal campaign.

So, to the Xaviers and UABs out there, it’s playing to the last second that wins the contest.
