A proposal to build a Wal-Mart in Mokena will need some tweaking, members of the village’s Concept Review Team told company representatives last week.

Community Development Director Paul Gorte said the company wants to start with a 147,000-square-foot Wal-Mart on the south side of 191st Street west of La Grange Road. The building could expand to a 202,000-square-foot Super Wal-Mart if needed, Gorte said.
Concept team members were “generally in favor, but looking for adjustments,” he said.
When Wal-Mart returns with a revised plan May 15, the panel wants the retailing giant to address such issues as adding more landscaping and providing an attractive facade on both the front and back of the building.
Other local concerns include the store’s economic impact and Wal-Mart’s willingness to restrict operating hours to less than the 24-hour pattern typical of Super Wal-Marts, he said.
If the proposal goes through, Wal-Mart could be Mokena’s first big-box store. An earlier plan for a Home Depot-anchored retail shopping center on the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 30 and Wolf Road fell through when Home Depot was unable to reach an agreement with the landowners.
