player ready...NBC, which has NASCAR as its biggest regular sports attraction, will add some more wheels to its lineup next year.
The network is teaming with Clear Channel Entertainment to create the Action Sports Tour, which NBC is billing as the “first-ever, seasonlong, nationally televised, competitive tour” for competitors in skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross. The tour is scheduled to kick off in April 2005.
The tour will feature a series of events, staged at Clear Channel venues and televised by NBC, from April to October. A points system will determine champions in each of the three sports at the end of each season. Some stops will incorporate other sports, such as surfing or in-line skating.
The Action Sports Tour will be the biggest network-TV commitment ever to extreme sports, whose biggest TV venue to this point have been the twice-a-year X Games on ESPN and ABC. NBC will also have a cable partner in the venture.
