The Bigger Lovers
This Affair Never Happened … and Here are Eleven Songs About It
Most power-pop bands lack that certain oomph. Thankfully, Philadelphia’s Bigger Lovers pack some muscle along with the melodies, and if the brilliantly convoluted album title of the band’s third disc is a little more memorable than the songs, the group still manages to find some freshness in documenting the ups and downs of love. Even so, it’s ultimately the frenetic fuzz of “Blowtorch” and the ecstatic harmonies of “You (You, You)” that make the disc such a joy. A beefed-up cover of the oft-overlooked Only Ones’ “You’ve Got to Pay” proves there’s plenty of power-pop inspiration lying just beyond such obvious touchstones as Big Star.
