Grant-Lee Phillips

Virginia Creeper

Since the dissolution of Grant Lee Buffalo and his subsequent solo career, singer Grant-Lee Phillips has never quite realized his potential as a songwriter. The generally hushed “Virginia Creeper,” however, may be as close as he’s come to producing a real keeper. The overlying mood of the songs is one of dreamy resignation. The songs feel as arcane as folk and fairy tales. The disc captures the people and places of a dusty and mysterious America that may not really exist anymore.
