All right, John McCain, you tough-talking senator. This challenge is for the man you see in the mirror.

How about backing your strong words by acting on a congressional bill that could effectively stymie the steroid industry? And now for the double-dare: How about doing it during –gasp!–an election year?

Didn’t think so. Besides war hero, true American, ex-presidential candidate and the people’s politician, Sen. McCain, R-Ariz., added another description to his congressional bio this week: grandstander.

To be sure, the baseball world took great pleasure in McCain’s passionate rebuke of players union boss Donald Fehr for standing guard against a substantive drug policy. But Fehr quietly offered an intelligent rebuttal: If Congress is so concerned about steroids, why doesn’t Congress do something about it?

What? Stop bowing to lobbying efforts of drug and dietary supplement companies?
