Trustees unanimously approved an ordinance this week banning the use of cellular phones with picture-taking capabilities in child-care facilities, public restrooms and health clubs.

The action was initiated by Mayor Roger Claar, who said he became aware of the issue in recent news reports.

Without the ordinance, Claar said police have no way of enforcing violations. The ordinance also includes the use of other kinds of cameras and recording devices.

Police Chief Mike Calcagno said the village has not received any complaints but believes the law will act as a pre-emptive strike.

The penalty carries a minimum fine of $500 and a maximum fine of $1,000.
