Destroyer

Your Blues

Dan Bejar earned the odd credit “secret member” on the last New Pornographers disc, but his three excellent contributions were hardly a secret. Bejar doesn’t hide at all in Destroyer; in fact, he’s the band’s driving force, contributing most of the music and almost all of its eccentric glam-rock aspirations. The cheesy synths decorating much of “Your Blues” don’t always suit Bejar’s flair for the melodramatic–he needs a bit more muscle to pass as the indie-rock Bowie-meets-Meatloaf. But songs such as “It’s Gonna Take an Airplane” and “From Oakland to Warsaw” still have a way of rising above their low-budget, highly affected and sometimes deliriously strange surroundings.
