The Popejoy name is well known in Midwest track circles. Ken Popejoy ranked among the nation’s top 10 milers in the mid-1970s and the late Charley Popejoy was an outstanding ath-lete who was a Big Ten track champion and is in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. This week Wheaton Warrenville South senior Mike Popejoy, valedictorian of his class, decided to run for Notre Dame. “I just want to perform at the levels I know I can,” he said about his final prep track season. “I want to get to 4:10 in the mile, nine minutes in the two-mile.” Last fall he finished 17th in the Class AA state cross country meet while battling an iron deficiency. Popejoy’s younger brother Jon is also an outstanding runner.
