Something about Old Crow Medicine Show seems like nothing more than a perverse bit of retro one-upmanship: As far as punk cred goes, fiddle and banjo mountain music is about as old-school as it gets. Furthermore, there are enough real country and bluegrass bands around that you might wonder why anyone needs a bunch of Nashville-based neophytes. But the band’s experience as street buskers lends their debut a bit of authenticity. It’s telling that one of the few originals, the Vietnam parable “Big Time in the Jungle” (with Gillian Welch on drums!), is an early standout. Take away: Bluegrass buskers
