Cee-Lo

Cee-Lo Green … is the Soul Machine

The album title’s declaration aside, Cee-Lo isn’t kidding–the disc is all over the place. In this sense, the former Goodie Mob member has a lot in common with his friends and fellow Atlanta genre-defying artists OutKast, and Cee-Lo’s offering could easily fill the final slot if OutKast were a trio and “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” a three-disc set. But with his pinched singing and idiosyncratic rhymes, combined with ace production from the Neptunes, Timbaland, Organized Noize, Jazze Pha, DJ Premier and Cee-Lo himself, the album is certainly never boring and, at its best, no less than breathtaking.

Take away: Future funk
