Had I known I was paying to dig my own parking spot, maybe I would have packed a shovel.
On a recent midmorning, I learned the hard way that finding a parking spot at the Rosemont Blue Line CTA station after the early rush is akin to unearthing dinosaur bones in the back yard–right! After several tours through packed rows of cars, my next stop was the parking garage at Cumberland, the next stop on the Blue Line. But my luck didn’t change after entering the four-story garage; not a space to be found anywhere.
Then I saw it: a rooftop parking spot on the end half-filled with knee-deep slush pushed in place by a snowplow. Late, I couldn’t be picky.
So with snow brush in bare hand I carved out my asphalt claim, clearing away enough snow to roll into a tight spot with millimeters to spare. Not even the blood trickling from my scraped index finger could stop my pursuit of this precious real estate and date with an inbound train. Now if I only had a couple of folding chairs to preserve the spot for the next day.
