Jon Langford

All the Fame of Lofty Deeds

Whether with the Mekons, Waco Brothers or Pine Valley Cosmonauts, among his many, many projects, Chicago-by-way-of-Wales rocker Jon Langford rarely disappoints. If anything, after dozens of releases, this relatively low-key, stripped-down concept album about the rise and fall of fictional country singer Lofty Deeds comes as a welcome change of pace. With a smirk you can almost hear, Langford spins his tales of the American dream gone bad with just the right degree of rueful humor, as if bad’s the way it always turns out.

Take away: Country blues
