They Were Wrong, So We Drowned
If you relish texture and appreciate recurring oddities, then this is your bag. Layering sparse tribal beats with futuristic sound effects and art-star guitars, the Liars are taking the willing on a carnival ride into sonic disarray. The impatient may as well bail. But for those who stick with it, there are definitely melodic rewards to be had within the distortion. Things get lush and a little funky on “There’s Always Room on the Broom” and “They Don’t Want Your Corn They Want Your Kids,” so don’t pack up those moves you broke out for the last dance-punk Liars album just yet–but do shelf your preconceived notions.
