Mountain Goats
We Shall All Be Healed
As great as his lo-fi works may be, the prolific John Darnielle’s recent, slightly more polished Mountain Goats albums are a welcome development, if only because they attract so many new ears to Darnielle’s quirky songs. “We Shall All Be Healed” was recorded by the equally prolific John Vanderslice, though the disc is still full of character-rich rough edges. Quirky though they may be, Darnielle’s songs are steeped in the sort of melancholia that’s only derived from the mundane realities of everyday life, love and loss. With the Mountain Goats, the devil is in Darnielle’s details, surrounded by melodies just upbeat enough to lure you into his unique world.
