Unsung: The Best of Helmet 1991-1997

Hot on the heals of Nirvana’s success, Helmet was signed as the alt-rock revolution’s next great hope. But whereas grunge offered sludgy, dull, hard rock edges for the masses, Helmet offered razor-sharp lockstep riffs that were frequently too smart for their own good. This belated best-of carries an apt name, as “Unsung” remains the band’s creative and melodic high point, but the rest of the disc reveals singer/guitarist Page Hamilton’s gift for finding diversity and sometimes even hooks in the band’s rigid, minimalist metal sound.

Take away: Minimalist metal
