The Coral

Magic and Medicine

The Coral’s debut was a blast of creativity, a disc full of skewed sea shanties and ’60s psychedelia, an achievement made all the more impressive by the members’ barely post-teen ages. So what happened? “Magic and Medicine,” released last year in England and only now seeing U.S. release, is an altogether mellower affair that abandons much of the excitement of the band’s first album. Despite some strong melodies, the disc feels somewhat cold and clinical, coming off as just another faithful nod to trippy ’60s aesthetics. The talent’s there, for sure, but for an album trying to resurrect the shambling infectiousness of “Nuggets”-like garage rock, “Magic and Medicine” lacks rough edges.

Take away: ’60s redux
