America’s Sweetheart
Reviled as the Yoko Ono of grunge, Courtney Love hasn’t earned a lot of respect for her successes, with credit generally going to the invisible involvement of ringers Kurt Cobain and Billy Corgan. The ringer behind much of “America’s Sweetheart” is Linda Perry, the hack hitmaker who has helped Pink and Christina Aguilera; and, on one song, Bernie Taupin. But from the first song, the disc sounds very much like a Courtney Love project. Maybe it’s just because today’s pop stars lack personality. Love, on the other hand, is part shooting star and part runaway train, and even at its mellower moments, “America’s Sweetheart” feels like it might explode in a ball of flame. Love deserves credit for trying to make music that lives up to her larger-than-life persona.
