The Flatlanders
Wheels of Fortune
It’s hard to imagine Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore or Butch Hancock going wrong on their own, but collectively as the cult folk/country/ rock/whatever Lubbock, Texas, supergroup the Flatlanders, the trio is about as close to a sure thing as anything else in music. With tracks contributed by all three songwriters and lead vocals shuffled from song to song, the principal Flatlanders exude a sense of friendship that no doubt explains how they’ve managed to stick together for so long. And the upbeat, get-together vibe emanates from the speakers like the telltale sound of the band’s trademark musical saw.
