The property, known as Janssen Farm and located near Steger and Wolf Roads, is within the Jackson Creek Watershed. Preserving it as open space will help preserve Jackson Creek, which flows through the property, said Joanne Webb, director of the Jackson Creek Watershed Preservation Group.
Preserving the farm also will protect nearby properties from flooding, protect the groundwater in the area and create a place for flora and fauna to flourish, Webb added.
The Forest Preserve District’s Land Acquisition Committee approved buying the farm last week, District Commissioner Cory Singer said. Singer and Commissioner James Moustis have led the effort on the board to have the farm acquired for forest preserve land.
