Emergency repairs scheduled to begin Tuesday to the Elgin Elevated Water Tower on the northeast side of Joliet may leave a funny taste in the mouths of nearby residents and a rusty residue on their laundered clothes.
The City of Joliet announced Monday that repairs to the tower will continue through Wednesday and advised residents of the Forest Park, Ridgewood, Edge Creek and Park Hill neighborhoods to refrain from laundering clothes while repairs are being made. Although the water is safe for drinking, cooking and bathing, there’s a possibility rust-colored water will make its way from the tower into water pipes and washing machines, causing garment discoloration, officials said.

Should discoloration occur, residents should not dry the clothes but go to their nearest fire station to obtain rust removal chemicals, officials said. They added that though water service likely will not be disrupted, residents may experience fluctuations in pressure.
