Palatine’s Kyle Sorensen remembers the 1997 state swimming meet–the clamor during the 50-yard freestyle, the silence before results were posted. And he recalls his elation when the “1” was placed next to his brother’s name. “He’s a great influence on me,” Kyle said of Ryan. “He comes to my meets. He’s a great role model.” Kyle, whose specialty also is the 50 free, is aiming to top Ryan’s time (21.19 seconds). He hasn’t yet–his best is :21.34–but few have beaten him during the quest. Kyle has three losses in about 25 races this season. The junior hopes to duplicate his brother’s title. “To win in the same event–I just couldn’t put that into words,” he said.
