The CTA distributed approximately 23,000 free transit cards to passengers during rush hour Thursday in apology for service problems earlier in the week. On Tuesday evening, a Purple Line train collided with a Brown Line train in the Loop area, causing major delays for commuters along the route and stalling the 1,200 passengers on both trains.

“This is our way to thank our customers for their patience and cooperation during the accident Tuesday evening. We understand they were inconvenienced,” a CTA spokesperson said.

Each transit card was worth one ride.

After the collision Tuesday, the CTA also provided a bus shuttle along the Purple and Brown lines. All other lines operated normally.
