Village officials gave final approval to a proposed Lowe’s home improvement store, but questions remain on how much that additional traffic generated by a major development will clog an already congested area.

The Village Board approved the 116,000-square-foot Lowe’s and surrounding 44-acre site on a 6-1 vote this week. Trustee Edward Schussler, citing traffic congestion, opposed the plan.

Lowe’s will serve as the anchor tenant of a development on what would be 157th Street between La Grange Road and 94th Avenue.

Schussler also expressed support for Wheeler Drive to be extended west to La Grange instead of the planned 157th Street.

Two traffic signals are also being planned along 157th Street, one on La Grange Road and one on 94th Avenue, said Nathan Utz, traffic engineer for the site and an engineer with McDonough and Associates.

The site will also feature a bike path connecting neighborhoods on both sides of La Grange Road and eventually leading to Centennial Park, said Bob Sullivan, community development director.
