Tom Waits

One from the Heart soundtrack

Tom Waits didn’t always hide beneath his gravely carnival barker persona. Since it was Waits’ early material that caught his ear, Francis Ford Coppola commissioned the singer to write a series of old-school, piano-jazz duets for the soundtrack to his film. The result was the classy, stylish “One from the Heart,” cleaned up here for re-release. The songs have held up better than the film itself, and Waits–who in 1982 was about to take a plunge into the avant garde with “Swordfishtrombones”–would never sound this straightforward again.
