Want the wicking but not the clinging?

One of the latest tweaks of performance wear is Nike Sphere, which keeps the moisture-management capability of its predecessor garments while loosening up the fit.

The idea? To “create your own personal atmosphere”–the airspace between garment and body keeps you warm (or cool).

Follow your heart to fitness

Time and distance aren’t the only variables to track during a workout.

“I’m a huge heart-rate training fan,” says Philip Deeter, general manager of Fleet Feet running store in Pipers Alley and a veteran of 16 marathons. “It’s a much smarter, efficient and really a safer way to train.”

That’s true no matter the goal: burning fat during a spinning class (you might actually want to slow down your heart rate a beat or two), building up to the Boston Marathon, or staying fit during a pregnancy, Deeter said.

Most heart-rate monitors that Fleet Feet carries–by Nike, Timex and Polar–come with a chest strap that feeds information to a wristwatch, for more accurate readings.

“When I do my marathon training, sure, I’ve got to get my 18- and 20-milers in,” Deeter said. “But really, internally, knowing what’s happening in my body is where I make my improvements.”
