Calla
Calla
Often heralded in the same excited breath as Interpol and the Rapture, Calla does owe a similar debt to late-’70s/early ’80s gloom rockers such as Joy Division and the Cure. If anything, Calla is even gloomier, especially since the New York band tends toward the cinematic. There’s not much in the way of melody beneath all the strange sounds and distorted boiler room noises, but Calla proves that sometimes thick, dark slabs of mood are more than enough.
Take away: Murky mood
