High school student Matt Hamblin was among dozens of placard-waving young people who mobbed the vehicle of Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina when he arrived Wednesday at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant.

Hamblin told a reporter what had moved him to such a frenzy: “They told us, `When he gets here, start screaming and storm the vehicle and act all excited.’ I was like, `Cool.'”

But Hamblin, 18, had a dirty little secret. “Actually, I don’t agree with him,” he said. “I like Bush. I’m a Republican.”

PLAYING LEFT WING?

During the New Hampshire campaign, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts made clear how much he loves hockey. He took to the ice for a charity game with former Boston Bruins, comedian Denis Leary and high school students.

On Wednesday, Kerry told reporters, “I want to play with the Red Wings,” and said he has talked with the owner about shooting the puck around with the Detroit team during practice, perhaps before the Feb. 7 Michigan caucuses.

Asked what he would do in non-hockey states, Kerry said: “Ride a bucking bronco, ski in New Mexico, I don’t know.”
