Double Pan American Games karate gold medalist John Fonseca of Chicago is among a dozen athletes nominated for the Amateur Athletic Union’s prestigious Sullivan Award this year to be announced April 13. Fonseca, 28, who graduated from Glenbrook North High School and Loyola University and has recently opened a karate school in Skokie, topped the Pan Am field in 1999 and 2003 in the light heavyweight division and has won a gold and a bronze medal in world championship competition. Fonseca said he probably wouldn’t vote for himself given the company he’s in, a list that includes swimmer Michael Phelps, speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno and Heisman Trophy winner Jason White.
