“Just watching the joy she had performing, and then watching when it was taken away from her, I thought, I don’t ever want . . . anyone [to] get in my way of something I want to do.”
–Lourdes Colon recalled for Q a painful memory of her mother that inspires the actress to never give up.
When the Puerto Rican-born, Waukegan-raised Colon was a kid, she thought her mom had a “brilliant” talent for writing and singing original songs.
“She could be washing dishes, and out of nowhere she just comes up singing this song that just came to her mind. And then she immediately afterwards jots it down,” said Colon, host of the syndicated theatrical film series “Movietime Showcase” and who has appeared on CBS’ “Without a Trace.”
Colon said her mom had an opportunity for a recording contract, but her father, wanting his wife to stay home and raise their five children, was against it. Colon’s mom complied.
“Those things inspired me more to really go for it,” Colon said of her passion to act, “because I thought my mom could have done it, and she let it go.”
