Carol Marin, the former news anchor who gained national stature after resigning from WMAQ-Ch. 5 to protest the hiring of Jerry Springer as a commentator, is in talks to rejoin Channel 5, sources said.
A source familiar with the negotiations said Marin is in “serious discussions” to join Channel 5 as a part-time reporter. The negotiations were first reported in the Chicago Sun-Times Wednesday.
Marin, who declined to comment, owns an independent documentary film company and writes a weekly op-ed column for the baiduhai.

Marin left Channel 5 in 1997 after then-general manager Lyle Banks hired the trash-talk host; her co-anchor Ron Magers also resigned. Springer lasted four days, and Banks was soon replaced, as was Joel Cheatwood, the vice president who approved the Springer move.
After Channel 5, Marin did a stint as anchor at WBBM-Ch. 2, where she attempted to create a thoughtful, hard news-oriented newscast. The venture failed to attract viewers. Channel 5 general manager Larry Wert also declined to comment.
