Gary Allan

See If I Care

Orange County, Calif., is known for watery punk, not country music. Yet here’s O.C. native Gary Allan singing country tunes like a Nashville pro. Let’s amend that, actually: Allan sings like a pro, but he steers clear of the half-baked confections Nashville keeps dumping on the market. There’s an earthier feel to Allan’s songs, like maybe he really connects with the heartache in “Songs About Rain.” It’s one of several ballads on the album, but Allan can do more than cry in his beer.
