Wal-Mart representatives are scheduled to appear before Mokena’s Concept Review Committee on Feb. 25 to present a plan for a store on 191st Street west of La Grange Road, interim community development director Craig Hullinger told the Village Board this week.
The proposal is in its infancy, said Mayor Robert Chiszar, who said he expects the company to alter its typical “big box” design to meet Mokena’s architectural standards.
“Presumably they have changed their corporate philosophy to build community buildings,” the mayor said.
Many towns find the sales-tax revenue generated by a Wal-Mart could beef up their budgets, he said.
The proposal is the latest in a series of large-store retail chains to seek a site in the Frankfort-Mokena-New Lenox area.
National retailers already open for business include CVS Pharmacy and Blockbuster Video in Mokena, and Kohl’s, Sportmart and Bed, Bath and Beyond in Frankfort.
Construction is due to start in the spring on a Home Depot in Mokena and Target, Lowe’s and Menards have been approved to start building in New Lenox.
