The Unicorns
Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?
The members of Montreal trio The Unicorns rely on low-fi (meaning cheap) children’s keyboards, scruffy guitars that may or may not be out of tune and a variety of other instrumentation (the accordion, recorder, fiddle and pennywhistle). Mixing the angular guitar elements of Television with the fury of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (sans the blues) and the off-kilter whimsy of Ween and Flaming Lips, The Unicorns’ second full-length effort tips the bizarre side of the weird scale. Yet there’s something strangely appealing about The Unicorns’ innocent, exuberant approach that works. Take away: Magical mystery
