Korn
Take a Look in the Mirror
As with most musical genres, heavy metal suffers from fickle kids hunting for a “next.” The nihilistic nu-metalists of Korn, with their inconsolable lyricist Jonathan Davis, have found theirs by CliffsNotes-ing their gloomy, frenzied past to create a blunt, brighter present. Davis pushes Korn through impressionistic short-song takes on gloom, shame and frenzy, including the molten metal-hop of “Y’all Want a Single” and the chiming chopped-pop of “Alive.” The sound is more frenetic, but it comes with an inventiveness that’s as tender as a brass-knuckled uppercut.
