Capsule reviews of new DVDs/videos released Tuesday (subject to change by studios):
American Wedding (star)1/2
One more slice of raunchy comedy from the “American Pie” franchise, “American Wedding” brings back most of the male members of the “Pie” gang for a high-priced wedding–between clumsy Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) and ever-ready band camper Michelle Flaherty (Alyson Hannigan)–that manages to be both gross and sentimental, often at the same time. What the movie does miss are laughs. R (for sexual content, language and crude humor). (MPAA rating: R) — Michael Wilmington
So Close (star)(star)1/2
Directed by action choreographer Cory Yuen, “So Close” is a beautiful mess. Knockout siblings Lynn and Sue are professional assassins. Lynn does the killing, kicking up her stilettos to mesmerizing effect, while Sue orchestrates through her World Panorama surveillance system, an invention of her dead father’s. There’s a whole complicated plot to go along with the action, but it’s really not important–other than to note that in addition to the high-fashion goddesses Lynn and Sue, there’s a woman cop with brainy allure who can dress and kick as sharp as the siblings.
