When TV One begins programming in January, viewers will be greeted by some familiar faces. The cable network, which targets African-American viewers, has purchased the rights to “Good Times” and “227.”

Both comedies, bought from Sony Pictures Television, will be part of TV One’s prime-time schedule when the network launches.

“Good Times” debuted on CBS in 1974 and starred Esther Rolle as Maude Findlay’s former maid Florida Evans. The series also co-starred John Amos, a young Janet Jackson and Jimmie Walker, who earned two Golden Globe nominations for his role as J.J.

“227,” which starred Marla Gibbs as a variation on the wisecracking character she played on “The Jeffersons,” ran for five seasons on NBC, during which time co-star Jackee Harry became its breakout star, picking up an Emmy in 1987.

“Many adult African-Americans grew up with these two comedy series, and our research shows that our target audience looks forward to seeing these classics as part of the TV One lineup,” says Johnathan Rodgers, the cable network’s president and CEO.
