Rich Melluzzo doesn’t get this “kindergarten for men” nonsense.

That is what a bar in Hamburg, Germany, is calling itself, where women drop their guys off to engage in games, home-improvement coaching, and a meal and two beers, while the ladies go shopping.

“I don’t understand why a German man would allow that to be done to him,” said Melluzzo, 52. “Why wouldn’t he just stay home?”

Melluzzo and his friend Ron Bisiewicz were waiting it out in a more sophisticated venue while their wives shopped–a sports bar. Specifically, InField’s, located in the lower level of Marshall Field’s State Street store.

Opened several weeks ago, the bar and restaurant, which serves burgers, pizza and other fare, has several plasma televisions turned to any cable and broadcast network carrying a ball game. It’s perfect for a guy not into tailing significant others while they try on shoes, sample perfumes and wondering if this dress fits as their man holds the purse and parcels.

“The girls are meeting us down in here in about a half-hour, and this is the perfect place,” said Bisiewicz, 56, who with the Melluzzos was visiting Chicago from Massachusetts.

“It facilitates the man who is with his wife downtown, and while she shops he can watch a game or drink a beer,” explained Field’s regional director Ralph Hughes.

Why don’t some guys enjoy the shopping experience with their special someone?

“If I go shopping, I’m going to shop for 20 minutes,” Melluzzo explained. “I don’t want to be trying on 14 pairs of pants.”

Added Bisiewicz: “If I’m done in 20 minutes and she wants to leisurely shop for an hour, let’s say, then I’m a pain in the [neck] for the last 40 minutes, because I’m saying, `C’mon, let’s go.'”
