(13) ST. IGNATIUS 53 Northridge Prep 50

Non-conference

Senior guard Alex Brzozowicz tallied 24 points, five rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots as the Wolfpack (7-2) narrowly avoided its second consecutive loss. Northridge Prep (4-5) had a chance to force overtime, but Danny Kieres missed a three-pointer off the side of the rim as time expired. St. Ignatius maintained the lead, thanks to 10-of-10 free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter. Kieres led Northridge with 15 points–including three three-pointers in the final quarter–and six rebounds, while Brendan Keleher added 11 points. Northridge lost starting guard Cullen Lee in the second quarter due to a twisted left ankle.

Jacobs tournament

Todd Babington scored 21 of his 27 points in the first half as Prairie Ridge took a 46-10 halftime lead and rolled to an 80-25 win over Round Lake. Brett Cole added 12 points for the Wolves, while Adam Hussain led Round Lake with nine.

Kyle Carrabine had 14 points and seven rebounds and William Parrish added 12 points and nine rebounds to lead four Wildcats in double figures. Neuqua Valley (5-4, 3-1) broke open the game with a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter. Jarrett Starwood scored 23 points, including four three-pointers, off the bench to lead Waubonsie Valley (6-3, 1-2).

Paul Bayer scored 22 points, Wesley McCorkle had 17 points and Jordan Salmonson added 10 points as the Maroons (8-1) held on. Pat Relaford and Kenny Gordon each scored 15 points to lead Rich South (5-4).

WHEELING 55 Mather 46

Non-conference

Dan Rukavina scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Wildcats (7-3). Wheeling trailed 42-40 entering the fourth, but outscored Mather 15-4 to clinch the victory. Alex Washington added 16 points for Wheeling. Amir Resic’s 12 points led Mather (6-2), which missed all 17 of its field-goal attempts in the final period.

Morgan Park 58 R. JEFFERSON 56

Halston Hallman scored 22 points, including two free throws with six seconds to play, as the Mustangs (5-3) held on for the victory. Morgan Park led by 12 points at the start of the fourth quarter, but Rockford Jefferson (5-2) rallied for a 56-56 tie. Morgan Park made things difficult from the foul line, making just 11-of-21 free throws. “You’ve got to make your free throws,” Morgan Park coach Herb Ray said. “It’s a lack of focus sometimes. You get down to the end of a game, and we couldn’t close it. We shouldn’t have that much trouble finishing games.” Ricky Ellis had 22 points and four three-pointers for Jefferson.

Warren 47 Palatine 33

Casey Pond scored 21 points and made 3-of-4 from three-point range to lead the Blue Devils (6-2). Pond, who was the only player to reach double figures for either team, went on a personal 7-0 run to end the first half to give Warren a 29-13 halftime lead. Grant Surprenant led Palatine (5-4) with eight points.

Chicago Public Schools tournament

Harlan coach Dennis Holmes alternates DeAnglo Alexander and Charles Massie in his starting lineup. Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Chicago Public League Holiday Classic, Holmes figured out the perfect arrangement. Alexander started and led all scorers with 22 points while Massie contributed 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench as Harlan won its sixth in a row, 92-60 over DuSable. Seven-footer Clay Holloway added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Harlan (6-3), while Jarrell Thomas led DuSable with 20 points. In earlier games, North Lawndale Prep improved to 12-0 with a 80-46 victory over Dunbar. Jason Pankey’s 20 points led four Phoenix in double figures. Washington (6-3) nipped Lincoln Park 60-58 as Courtney Horton had 19 points, and Corliss (5-3) was a 60-50 winner over South Shore. Roland Downey had 17 points to lead Corliss.

Nick Jones scored 16 points and Jeremy Head added 13 as CICS-Longwood edged Holy Trinity 53-51. Holy Trinity’s Jacarri Rose led all scorers with 20 points. . . . Bob Cassidy’s 20-point effort lifted Ag. Science over U-High 58-56. Aaron Summers led U-High with 18 points. . . . Darrell Allen tallied 21 points and Shawn Clinton added 19 as Bowen defeated Kelly 55-42. Steve Gonzalez led Kelly with 20 points. . . . Washington downed Clemente 74-60 behind 17 points apiece from Courtney Horton and Jamal Adeboyo. John Melecio led Clemente with 19 points. . . . Stan Arnold scored 17 points as Evergreen Park routed Richards 76-42.

Jabarri Reynolds tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds and Bob McCormick contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds as Francis Parker (10-0) defeated Quigley 75-59.

Chicagoland Holiday Challenge

Brittany McCoy scored 14 points and distributed four assists as No. 3 Loyola routed Lake Park 63-29. Mary-Kate Casey added 13 points for the Ramblers (12-0), who led 24-6 after one quarter, and Lindsey Plass led Lake Park (4-9) with 10 points. . . . Lisa Wesolowski tallied a game-high 13 points as Downers Grove South ended the game on a 10-2 run in a 41-28 win over Maria. Lauren Meister added 10 points for the Mustangs (7-4), while Asia Agers led Maria (4-8) with 10 points.

Kristin Heidloff scored nine of her 17 points during a 13-2 run to end the third quarter as Fenwick downed East Chicago (Ind.) Central 67-46. East Chicago Central led 34-33 in the third quarter before the Friars (9-1) started a 24-2 run that saw them hold their opponent scoreless for a nine minute, 25 second span. Devereaux Peters scored 14 points for Fenwick, and Kelly Watts led East Chicago Central with 15 points.

LaToya Wright scored 25 points as the Silver Streaks (13-0) defeated the Bison in front of 2,000 fans. Senior Ashley Sandstead led Buffalo Grove (10-2) with 17 points and freshman Rachel Buchek added 15 points.

Megan Gorski sank four free throws in the final minute to lift the Spartans (7-6). Amy Palash collected 15 points and 10 rebounds for St. Francis, and Mackenzie Murnane added 12 points.

Brooks tournament

Brittany Young’s 13 points and eight rebounds sparked Corliss to a 51-41 win over Lincoln Park. . . . Lauren Coleman poured in 36 points to carry Bronzeville to a 48-28 victory over Bowen. . . . Katrina Carr collected 14 points and 10 rebounds as Harper downed Brooks 62-48.

Upstate Eight

Friday’s game Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton came up with a triple-double to help the Wildcats, playing without Brittanie Taylor-James who has pneumonia, win in overtime. The 6-3 senior had 21 points, 11 rebounds, 10 steals and seven assists for Neuqua Valley (8-2, 3-0) while Carlie Janowiak led the Warriors (4-5, 2-1) with 17 points.

TEAMS, SYNOPSIS

Lockport tournament

Heather Haemker (1,283 pins) and Kim Unger (1,255) finished second and fourth, respectively, to lead Prospect to the team title. Jill Szklarski of Reavis won the individual championship with a pinfall of 1,304. Led by the sixth and seventh-place efforts of Danielle Humphrey and Kaila Slovan, respectively, Lockport Maroon finished only 31 pins behind Prospect in second place. Schaumburg, the Tribune’s preseason No. 1 team, placed third with 5,592, edging fourth-place Conant by 58 pins. Schaumburg’s Kristin Harper was third individually with 1,278 pins.

Invitational

Stevenson won both the 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays as it cruised to the team title with 345 1/2 points. Also winning events for the Patriots were Tommy Gregory in the 100 butterfly (:52.57 seconds) and Brian Boger in the 100 freestyle (:48.93). David Hedge of second-place Libertyville and Theo Kuezek of Deerfield also won two events each.

Invitational

Grant wrestlers earned pins at three of the four lowest weight classes, and the Bulldogs went on to the team title. Jim Kennedy at 103 pounds, John Deneen (112), Daniel Dennis (125) and Jesse Linczmaier (160) all won their respective classes for Grant. Jamie Smith (135) and Mark Smith (145) won for second-place Wheeling.

Rich East Invitational Neuqua Valley won the team title behind five weight-class champions: Brian Spangler (103 pounds), Sean Kinney (112), Eric Vargas (130), Matt Collum (145) and Cordero Hightower (189). Runner-up Reavis boasted four champions, including Jake Polich’s 2-1 overtime win over Neuqua Valley’s Jason Berry at 215 pounds.
