Network television executives are catching on that journalists are hot. Joel Stein is the latest scribe to pitch himself to the networks in comedy form.

According to the New York Metro Web site, Stein, a Time magazine columnist and television regular, has sold a semi-autobiographical comedy pitch to Warner Bros. TV. The series has reportedly been sold to ABC, although the degree of the network’s script or pilot commitment is uncertain.

The series is described as focusing on “a young guy without much journalism experience, who gets hired by a really serious newsmagazine.”

In addition to his Time gig, Stein briefly wrote a back page column for Entertainment Weekly, and has served as a pop culture commentator for programs on Trio, MTV and VH1.

Meanwhile, CBS is moving forward on “Shut Up and Listen,” its own comedy about a hard-working reporter. The series stars Jason Alexander as Washington Post sportswriter Tony Kornheiser, the co-host of ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption.”
