The former Des Plaines Public Library building at 841 Graceland Ave. could make way for downtown condominiums, officials said this week.

The one-story, 42,000-square-foot building has been vacant since 2000, when the city built a new library about three blocks north. The property is valued at $2.28 million.

City staff members are preparing a report that would study the pros and cons of razing the building and rezoning the site for multi-family housing.

City Manager David Niemeyer was also asked to consider how best to market the property.

Since it was vacated, the old library building has been considered and rejected as a possible site for a senior center, a community center and, most recently, a new police station.

The City Council will consider plans for the site within several weeks, officials said.
