The city has hired a deputy police chief from Elmhurst for the new position of emergency preparedness manager.
Peter Smith will start work on Jan. 5. The new position replaces the emergency management agency coordinator, which was a job in the city’s Fire Department. Smith will report directly to City Manager Peter Burchard.
Smith worked almost 35 years for the Elmhurst Police Department. As deputy chief, he was responsible for managing 80 percent of the department’s employees.
In Naperville, Smith will create and manage the city’s emergency preparedness program. He has experience working with the Anti-terrorism Committee of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, the Illinois Terrorism Task Force and the U.S. Justice Department’s Anti-Terrorism Task Force in Chicago.
