The woman who founded the USA Network is returning to television as chairwoman of a new channel devoted to reality programming.

Kay Koplovitz, who started USA in 1977 and was with the network for 21 years, will lead Reality Central through its launch, scheduled for the middle of next year. The channel, conceived by entrepreneur and former “Amazing Race” contestant Blake Mycoskie and E! founder Larry Namer, will begin on digital cable systems.

“Launching program networks today is a challenging proposition, and I believe Reality Central has the pop culture heat that will break through the clutter of channels,” Koplovitz said.

Koplovitz has some experience in launching a cable channel devoted to a specific genre. While at USA, she oversaw the creation of the SciFi Channel in the early 1990s. SciFi now reaches more than 80 million homes.

Reality Central will feature a mix of repeats of American and international reality series and original programs that offer behind-the-scenes details about unscripted shows and interviews with producers and contestants.
