Classes were cancelled at Kaneland High School in Maple Park Wednesday after a sport-utility vehicle struck a fire hydrant and cracked the building’s water main, officials said.

A student driving to school at about 6 a.m. for early-morning weightlifting hit the hydrant head-on with his Chevy Suburban and water began spilling into the roadway, said Assistant Supt. Tom Runty. The hydrant is near the school’s driveway.

Classes were canceled at about 8:45 a.m., after students had already entered the Kaneland Community Unit School District 302 building, said Supt. Charles McCormick.

There was no flooding in the school, and classes were in session at the elementary and middle school buildings.

Because all of the building’s water supply is connected through a well-based system, students were sent home after maintenance workers shut off the leaking water, McCormick said.

Officials expect classes to resume on Thursday.
